fed dogs unable to feign lack of interest in what's happening in the kitchen

You should always feed your dogs after you eat. This gives them the illusion that you, the benevolent overlord and protector, are no longer hungry and are allowing them the scraps. Last night we didn't eat till 9ish so they were already fed when we let them in. They found this to be an unbelievably fascinating state of affairs. In this picture we see Charlie stretched out on the beanbag acting like she just happened to be facing in the direction of the kitchen and Millie keeping her head fully twistable for any unusual - or just any - sound that might indicate someone about to put a large plate of something on the ground and then say 'we give in to your superior talent, eat everything you can'.

Same deal here. Although dozens of kilos lighter than yours, our local hounds are every bit as hungry and opportunistic. Sneaky little buggers alright. Fergus in particular, a normally less cuddly dog, seems to get awfully cosy on the couch next to us during dinner. Yes, we eat on the couch most nights - is that so terrible?

Oh, I meant to say that I liked your quote re: practising random acts of domination. Mine need that sort of thing also - unfortunately my partner does not see the same need, and as a result she comes fourth in the household rankings. I didn't say I was always first either.

We eat on the couch every night, and yes even last night I had a special guest trying to wheedle into my affection (or just, casually, you know, be there). Dogs like being dominated though, I think, it's an ongoing dialogue as far as they're concerned.
