I have just been reading Wilson Neate's 33 1/3 publication about Wire's Pink Flag (from pretty much the same period as this) and part of their ascetic bent was, 'no Americanisms'. This 'Money' drains all the americanism out of the song, with aplomb. But it's the crazy other noises (including the ridiculous string of sentences at the end - 'Give me your money', and so on - that makes the whole thing work beautifully.

The self-titled album and the follow up (Fourth Wall) were much better than the novelty singles (Money and Summertime Blues) initially suggested. Quite diverse and experimental including strange dub and ambient tracks. I loved 'Money' at the time (also for the kooky washed-out video and the way it brought the avant garde to commercial radio) but when they stretched the same formula over a the entire 'Top Ten' album a few years later it just became dull.
