I can't imagine what had to be altered for the North American market to read 'strip-cartoons'. 

Nor can I imagine how people walking towards a house from quite a long way off (bizarre perspective notwithstanding) can sound, within that house or anywhere, like a wardrobe creaking.

Mau Mau = a reference to the Kenya Land and Freedom Army. Somewhere along the way, for what it's worth, the action is now taking place in 'England'.
